Fall FastBridge Update

Dear Parents/Guardians,

One of our main goals is to use student data to guide our teaching and support.  To help us do this, we administer FastBridge, an assessment for reading, math, and social-emotional behavior three times a year (fall, winter, and spring).

Your child’s most recent FastBridge reading and math results will be available in ParentVue tomorrow, October 2.

What is Assessed?

Grades 6-8: aReading and aMath (reading and math skills)

SAEBRS (social, academic, emotional, behavior screening) Grades 4-7 SAEBRS, Grades 6-7 mySAEBRS (will be posted on October 14)

How to View Your Child’s Results

Log in to ParentVUE via the mobile app, school website, or district website.

Select Test History from the left-hand menu.

Troubleshooting Tips:

If using a computer, Google Chrome works best.

If you run into issues, try clearing your browser's cache or opening ParentVUE on your smartphone app.

Understanding the Results

FastBridge results offer a helpful snapshot of your child's learning journey, but they are only one part of the bigger picture. We combine these results with classroom tests, teacher observations, state assessments, and your input to support your child's unique needs.

If you have any questions about your child's progress or scores, please reach out directly to their classroom teacher.

8th Grade: PreACT October 22

On Thursday, October 22, students in eighth grade will take the PreACT 8/9, an online standardized test which serves as the starting point for the ACT suite of assessments. The system culminates with the ACT, a college-placement exam currently administered in the State of Illinois to all high school juniors. During the summer of 2024, the Illinois State Board of Education made the decision to switch to the ACT suite beginning the 2024-2025 school year.

District 200 will use eighth grade PreACT 8/9 scores for multiple purposes. They provide one of the data points for high school course placement, a baseline for measuring growth during high school, and information for school and district improvement. The PreACT 8/9 contains four subject tests which align with the ACT assessments your student will take in high school. These include English, math, reading and science.

While it provides one score to use for placement, PreACT 8/9 will not be the only measure used to determine freshman courses.  Other data points will also be considered for placement, including state test scores, district assessment data, grades, attendance, and feedback from teachers and parents. Your student’s results will be uploaded to Parentvue later this fall.

Academic Hour is Back!

Monroe is proud to bring back Academic Hour, an after school program twice per week, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-4pm. The purpose of this time is to assist students with academic support, provide time to complete missing assignments, and provide a focused and structured study session. Academic Hour is by invite only; we will invite students who are falling behind in their classes by either missing a series of assignments or earning a D and/or F in more than one class. According to preliminary data, we have about 50 students who would qualify for this support, which tells us that Academic Hour is needed and an important step to implement for student learning. We will prioritize by highest need as we can accommodate up to 30 students per session.

How it works:
On Fridays and Tuesdays, we will send automated email invitations to students and parents requesting student attendance at the Academic Hour the following day (Monday or Wednesday). These emails will come from my (Ashley Huettemann) email address. Students attending should report to room 338 after the 3pm bell. Ms. Skibbe will help students get organized, make a plan for the hour, and provide assistance as needed. Students can be picked up or take the activity bus home at 4pm. Please be sure your student knows their home address; they need that information when they take the activity bus.

How you can help:
As a school, we can strongly encourage attendance. As a parent, you can require your student to attend! Academic Hour should supersede participation in extracurricular activities. We appreciate your partnership and support as we try to develop strong habits in middle school that will set them up for success in high school and beyond.

Final notes:
Receiving an invitation to Academic Hour is not a disciplinary consequence. Rather, it is an early warning sign and is intended to be an opportunity for improvement. As a reminder, you have daily access to see your student's missing assignments and updated grades in ParentVUE.

Lightspeed Parent Portal Helps Parents Manage Student Screen Time

In Community Unit School District 200, supporting student success extends beyond classroom instruction to cultivating safe, healthy digital habits. We are proud to partner with Lightspeed Systems to empower families in guiding student digital activity on district-issued devices during out-of-school hours. Through the Lightspeed Parent Portal, parents and guardians gain greater visibility and control over their children’s online experience at home.

Lightspeed Offers New Features

To help families better manage screen time and promote balanced digital wellness, several new capabilities are now active in the portal:

Screen Time Reporting: View student screen time metrics at a glance, including daily averages, total 7-day usage, most-used applications, and clear breakdowns comparing in-school versus out-of-school digital activity.

Screen time data comes from Lightspeed Insight and tracks app-level activity across both school and after-school hours. Totals may differ from Lightspeed Filter web activity data

Be sure to click on the “How is this calculated?” link within the Screen Time Reporting Dashboard if there are any questions on how the metrics are arrived at for your student(s)

Automated Schedules: Set custom after-school schedule blocks—such as Focus Time during dedicated homework hours or Bedtime during sleep hours—to automatically apply restrictions or pause web browsing.

Custom Block Lists & Expanded Category Controls: Tailor after-school web safety rules by adding specific websites to a custom block list and managing access to specific categories, including social media, YouTube, games, shopping, and Artificial Intelligence tools.

Pause Internet Browsing: Instantly and temporarily pause internet access on school-issued devices after school hours for flexible durations of 1 hour, 3 hours, or overnight until 6:00 a.m.

How to Access & Learn More

Weekly activity summaries are automatically sent via email directly to enrolled primary guardians, offering quick snapshots of your student's online learning journey. From these emails, guardians can easily opt to register for full, live portal access to customize settings and view real-time data.

For step-by-step sign-up instructions, user guides, and additional resources, please visit the CUSD 200 Lightspeed Parent Portal Page.

We encourage you to review the summary of the Lightspeed Parent Portal’s newly released features.

CUSD 200 Cybersecurity Awareness - Spotting Red Flags

As cyber threats facing educational institutions continue to evolve, keeping our school community safe is a shared priority. While CUSD 200 email systems remain highly secure and are protected by robust security tools, maintaining digital safety requires ongoing vigilance from students, parents and staff.

Cybersecurity is a team effort. We encourage families to talk with their students about staying alert to suspicious online activities and protecting personal information.

Here are key red flags to look out for when checking emails:

Unsolicited Requests: Be cautious of emails requesting personal or financial details, asking for gift card purchases, or offering unexpected jobs and internships.

Suspicious Links and Forms: Always inspect URLs before clicking. Watch out for unexpected Google Forms or links attempting to capture login credentials.

Unusual Messages from Known Contacts: If a message from a teacher, staff member, or fellow student feels out of character or asks for sensitive actions, verify its authenticity in person or via phone before taking action.

By remaining proactive and working together, we can ensure a safe digital environment for all of our students. Thank you!
