Connecting, Caring, & Leading at Monroe

This past week, a group of 8th grade student leaders met with district leaders Dr. Schuler, Dr. Silagi, and Mr. Biscan in a roundtable discussion and discussed a variety of topics related to school connectedness and the middle school student experience. What a joy it was to be a fly on the wall during this lively discussion! I am so proud of these students for representing Monroe in such a positive and productive way. Their comments help school and district leaders develop an understanding of what is most important to them and what we do, have done, and can do in the future to help them find success academically and social-emotionally. This diverse group of student leaders report finding connections to Monroe through a variety of clubs, activities, sports, intramural opportunities, and consistent attendance. They noted that building strong connections with teachers and staff along with having special events to look forward to make them excited to come to school each day. Additionally, they noted specific instructional techniques teachers are using that help them learn best and even highlighted the vertical learning opportunities in math class that have helped them engage and understand the content at a higher level! (Yes, they actually did say that!) This group will have the opportunity to sit down twice more this school year to discuss additional topics and I look forward to hearing their voices as young leaders in our Monroe community. Bravo!

Just a few of the ways students are connecting to Monroe, caring for others, and demonstrating leadership are pictured below through our service club, eagle squad club, and our recent visit to Jefferson Early Childhood Center. Service club recently made cards for the organization Cards for Kidz. They also gathered to make blankets for a local animal shelter. Eagle Squad continues to be our most popular club for all students and provides an inclusive environment for students to develop positive social interactions and provide peer mentoring opportunities. Finally, students in Mrs. Croll's performance seminar and drama exploration classes walked down the street to our neighbors at Jefferson Early Childhood Center to perform for our youngest peers. Of course, these are just a few highlights of the many opportunities for students to connect to Monroe and our community.
