Curriculum Night Welcomed Many to Monroe

It was wonderful to see so many parents here for Curriculum Night last week. We hope it was an informational and enjoyable evening for all! If you missed the electives presentation in the 6th grade MPR, it is linked here for your convenience. Also listed below are the important dates mentioned in the parent presentation.

As mentioned on curriculum night, we are excited to share that we have launched a new way to celebrate our students’ positive behaviors! Students now earn “Monroe Moolah” for demonstrating our SOAR expectations (safety, ownership, attitude, and respect) throughout the school day. They can then spend their Moolah on prizes at our school store. If you are interested in making a donation to support the celebration of our students' positive behaviors, we are currently stocking our store with fun and meaningful incentives as requested by the students themselves! Donations could be items such as:

  • Small gift cards ($5 value)

  • Free coupons (ice cream scoop, donut, drink, etc.)

  • School supplies (pencils, notebooks, water bottles)

  • Snacks or treats

  • Other small items middle school students enjoy

We have also updated our Amazon Wish List if you would like to add to cart and send to Monroe!

All donations can be sent to:

Safety Week Next Week

School safety is our top priority. In District 200, we take a multi-faceted approach to keeping our schools safe. At Monroe, next week is Safety Week, where we will practice one drill each day of the week. Here is the schedule for your reference:

Monday 9/8 - Extreme Weather/Tornado Drill (7th Period)
Tuesday 9/9 - Law Enforcement/Lockdown Drill (3rd Period)
Wednesday 9/10 - Fire Drill (2nd Period)
Thursday 9/11 - Bus Evacuation Drill (Prior to lunch periods)
Friday 9/12 - Evacuation Site Walks (PE dept. classes)

All drills during safety week are carefully planned and communicated to the students. Teachers and staff prepare the students for each drill in advance. Our goal is to prepare and teach, not to catch anyone by surprise.

As a part of safety week and as required by law, you’ll notice on Tuesday we will complete a lockdown drill with the participation of the Wheaton Police Department. As a reminder, the ALICE protocol equips staff and students with response options during an active safety situation. Leading up to the drill, students will receive age-appropriate training on ALICE. During the drill, our students and staff will collaborate with our police department to practice the lockdown safety protocol.

In order to maintain a safe environment to study and learn, we must routinely practice safety drills and procedures. We look forward to educating our students on many facets of Monroe safety next week!

Attendance

Each year, we to emphasize the importance of your child attending school each day. Students who attend school regularly typically demonstrate higher learning outcomes than those with poor attendance. Being present each day affords your child all the important experiences that come with attending school such as friendships, clubs, activities, and athletics. Students also learn responsibility and work ethic through consistent attendance. Please send your child to school every day unless he or she has a contagious illness or is running a fever. Throughout this year we will monitor each student’s attendance so that we can work with families when the number of absences puts a student at risk. Thank you always for your involvement in your child’s education!

Transportation Update

Thank you to our Monroe community for providing feedback regarding bus routes assigned by Illinois Central. It has been a rocky start with buses arriving late to Monroe. While part of this issue is due to road construction, there are additional factors that Illinois Central and CUSD200 are closely monitoring that impact arrival times. Monroe will continue to communicate updates as we receive them from Illinois Central.

Classroom Spotlight: Adapted Physical Education

Adapted physical education (APE) is specially designed instruction in physical education that has been adapted or modified to meet the unique needs of students with varying abilities. APE focuses on an individualized and inclusive approach, building physical and motor skills as well as social interaction and relationship building. 8th grade student mentors serve as both leaders and buddies. Our APE teachers, Mrs. Kaminski and Mr. Snee, along with related service providers and teaching assistants, work hard to create an energetic, engaging, and safe learning environment. Please enjoy the pictures below!
