Illinois Assessment of Readiness: ELA Test This Week

Students in grades three through eight will take the IAR as their state test of English Language Arts and Math this year. IAR is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Math. It was first administered in 2019, and it was revised in 2021. Students will take the test online.

Monroe will administer the IAR ELA test on Wednesday, March 19th and Thursday, March 20th. We will administer the IAR Math test after spring break, on April 9-11.

Here are a few tips for preparation:

  • Prioritize a good night's sleep. Collect all phones/watches/AirPods prior to bedtime. Leave them to charge in the kitchen along with those Chromebooks!

  • Eat a healthy breakfast to fuel the body with great nutrients.

  • Practice deep breathing exercises for use during the test, if needed.

  • Keep a positive mindset!

Good luck, Eagles!

Gary Avenue Road Closure

The City of Wheaton has notified us that starting the week of March 24, Gary Avenue will be closed between Prairie and Harrison Avenues as crews begin the next phase of the Gary Avenue Reconstruction Project. This section of Gary Avenue is expected to be closed until mid-summer, once the south half of the road reconstruction is complete.

The construction may have traffic/transportation delays that change from day to day, and hour to hour. We ask our families to be patient and plan extra time to get to and from school each day.  We anticipate the construction and detours causing delays to some of our transportation routes through the end of the school year. While it is difficult to predict, we believe delays will likely affect the afternoon routes more than the morning routes. At Monroe, we anticipate PM bus 9 arriving from the high school at 3:09pm. As we learn more about the impact of this construction to our transportation routes, we will communicate any changes or updates to our routes.

For more information about the Gary Avenue Reconstruction Project, and to stay updated as the project progresses, we encourage you to visit www.wheaton.il.us/GaryAvenue. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we navigate the impacts of this construction.

Monroe's Promoting Class of 2025 Takes Flight — Celebrating the Winning Design!

This year, we invited our 8th grade students to unleash their creativity and design a special shirt for the Promoting Class of 2025. After a vote by staff and 8th-grade students, we’re thrilled to announce that Anna Valerio’s amazing design was chosen as the winner! Her artwork beautifully captures what it means to be a part of Monroe Middle School, and we couldn’t be more proud.  We hope to continue this tradition for years to come, so start thinking about your design ideas for next year!

Although this design celebrates our promoting 8th graders, everyone in the school is welcome to grab one of these awesome shirts!  Don’t miss out — let’s all wear our Monroe pride loud and proud!

Click here to order your shirt!

7th Grade Mock Job Interviews

Seventh graders in Speech Communications classes participated in mock job interviews last week.

Matt Jay from the Wheaton Park District visited the classes last week to share information about what to expect in a job interview and how to practice and prepare. Then he returned this week with his coworkers Max Yoshikawa and Rebecca Mendenhall to help conduct the mock job interviews.

Many parents came in to help with the interviews as well. The students would like to thank these parents for helping them practice this very important public speaking skill: Mrs. Serpico, Mr. Watkins, and Mrs. Zarob. Thank you to the staff that helped as well: Mrs. Berger and Ms. Larkin!

6th Grade Interrelated Arts (IRA) Plays

Students in this quarter's 6th grade elective courses put on performances about Chinese Folktales. Fifth period's play is called "Lon Po Po" and is a story similar to "Little Red Riding Hood." Sixth period's play is called "Yeh Shen" and is a story similar to "Cinderella." We love to see collaboration between multiple classes in the development of the plays and support from fellow students and teachers as they packed the auditorium during 5th and 6th periods.
