Dance Marathon to Support Lurie Children's Hospital Coming to Monroe!

Monroe is proud to host a Dance Marathon to Support Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago on Thursday, February 27 from 4-8pm. Please mark your calendars and plan to get involved and donate as you are able! Our goal is to raise $5,000 to support a cause near and dear to our hearts at Monroe. We will host this event in collaboration with the Monroe Boys Volleyball game against Hadley.

Dance Marathon is a student-led organization that raises funds and awareness throughout the year for sick and injured kids treated at Lurie Children's hospital, culminating at Dance Marathon. We will connect with and honor patient families, play games, enjoy entertainment, fundraise, and reveal our fundraising total.

Each week until February 27, we are selling raffle tickets for $1 during lunch to win a free Friday lunch. Donations can be made by clicking this link, via the QR code below, or by sending in cash or check to the Monroe main office. We will write a check to Lurie Children's Hospital on February 27th for the total amount collected at Monroe! If you are a part of a local business or have connections in the community and would like to get involved, please reach out to our student council sponsors, Sara Aghazadeh at sara.aghazadeh@cusd200.org and Katy Granbom at katherine.granbom@cusd200.org.

Thank you!

It's time to refresh those school supplies! We're noticing supplies are running low and students are often coming to school without the proper supplies. Click here for a full list of school supplies and check with your student to see what needs refreshing/replacing in the second semester. If you have any extra supplies you'd like to donate, please drop them off in the main office!

Building Updates

The planning process for building renovations is underway and we are getting ready for construction this summer! To keep our community informed, we have launched a Middle School Capital Facilities Projects webpage where you can stay updated on the progress of each improvement.

Before construction starts this summer at Monroe for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classrooms, we will be setting up two pilot classrooms so that staff and students can test new technology and furniture options. Their feedback will be essential to making final decisions for what will be included in Monroe, Franklin, and Edison's future updated classrooms!

Finally, our mission to continue making critical safety enhancements districtwide has not paused, even with the upcoming construction. Over winter break, NightLocks were installed at Monroe! NightLocks are a secondary locking mechanism that adds an extra layer of security in our schools. We are thankful for this new safety feature as it makes locking down quick, easy, and effective.

Classroom Spotlight: Mrs. Toner & Mrs. Mangin, Essentials

Students recently had an opportunity to travel to the Apple store in Naperville to participate in community based learning. Students learned how to express themselves and learn about emotions through creating their own Emojis!

Classroom Spotlight: Mrs. Rodgers, 6-8 grade PE

Monroe students participated in a new unit in P.E. called Nitro Ball, a combination of tennis and volleyball.  It can be a great lead-up style game to volleyball building passing and striking (with one or two hands) skills while working as a team. Here is a snapshot of some of my 6th grade teams practicing the game. The majority of P.E. classes that signed up for this unit enjoyed themselves and we will definitely play this again!

Classroom Spotlight: Ms. Sheppard, 7th grade ELA

Each week the students read and study a particular Shakespeare play that aligns with a chapter from The Wednesday Wars. The students devise "battle plans", collecting pertinent information to review the major plot points, character developments, and thematic connections between the two texts. Then, teams "battle" other teams with their knowledge of the texts. Teams earn points for completing battle plans and team battles, leading up to one group from each class being declared the winner of our "The Wednesday Wars War".

Classroom Spotlight: Mrs. Torres, 8th grade FP Science

Students "hopped to it" this week in fast paced science. Students engaged in a cellular respiration - muscle fatigue lab where they examined the interaction of the nervous system, muscular system, skeletal system, and circulatory system in terms of the rate students were able to continue a task for a certain amount of time. Students had a blast and at the same time were able to use their data to answer the essential question related to the effects of changing biological conditions. Well done!
