A message from the principal

Thank you to families who attended curriculum night. It was wonderful to see so many families in the building learning about our curriculum and the learning that happens in our classrooms.

This week we practiced a severe weather drill and next week we will be practicing a fire drill. Before and during these drills, we reinforce with staff and students the important procedures involved in an emergency response situation. I would encourage you to speak to your student about our drills this week.

We practice multiple drills each school year to practice safety procedures. Our drills are designed to train students and staff to move to a position of safety in an emergency. Throughout the fall months, students will participate in a bus evacuation drill, an additional fire drill, and a lockdown drill. By practicing emergency procedures, research shows we are more likely to respond effectively. For more information, you can visit CUSD200’s School Safety & Security website.

Please contact me with any questions.

Bell Schedule Reminders

Supervision outside begins at 8:50 a.m. Please do NOT drop your child off earlier than 8:50. We do not have adult supervision outside and want our students to be safe.

First bell rings at 9:00, which is when we welcome students into the building. The second bell rings at 9:05, which is when students should be in their classrooms ready for learning. If you arrive after 9:05, you must bring your child to door 1 for drop off so they can get a tardy slip from the office.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding!

Mrs. Mizwicki's Math Update

Welcome back to school! We are so excited to start the another year of Illustrative Math with your children. Along with IM, teachers at Lowell have been reading a book about math practices called "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics" by Peter Liljedhal that works well with our current way of doing math in D200.

What does this look like in the classroom?

  • Students work in randomly created groups at large whiteboards or in their workbooks.

  • Students take turns sharing their thinking

  • Teacher acts as a facilitator

  • Teacher furthers learning with questioning

  • Tasks are given throughout the math block and students and teacher come together to review what they have discovered.

How is the teacher supporting students who need help?

With this new model of math learning, students spend time exploring math and making discoveries with their small group. As the teachers move from group to group they will answer questions to move students’ thinking along. However, the teachers won't be giving the answer or telling them step by step instructions. They may ask them questions back in a way to move them in the right direction or simply say that they are in the right direction and keep trying.

How can you help at home?

  • Listen to the types of questions they are asking: Are they always asking questions that stop their thinking (Are we done yet? Am I right? Why do I need to do this?)

  • Ask your child "keep thinking" questions (Is that always true? Why do you think that? Can you explain how you know?)

  • Ask them who they worked with in math class and how well they worked as a team.

  • Support productive struggle at home: Things do not always have to be easy. In fact, the more kids are encouraged to try things outside their comfort zone, the better students they will be as they will learn it is ok to fail sometimes.

  • Play games at home: This is good not only in helping develop thinking skills, but also social skills like taking turns.

  • Read the IM Unit Overview from your child's teacher that will be sent home at the beginning of each unit: This will give you an idea of the topics being covered and how they are being taught.

  • Support the strategies your child is being taught. We realize these may look different than methods you learned, but they are evidence-based and age appropriate. Showing them other methods can make things confusing in the classroom.

  • Reach out to your child's classroom teacher or me via email with any questions lisa.mizwicki@cusd200.org
