A message from the principal

I have thoroughly enjoyed this first full week of school and seeing students get settled into routines of the day and their classrooms. I've visited every classroom and have seen amazing learning and student collaboration happening already.

This coming week, I will be visiting classrooms and taking time to discuss the seriousness and importance of refraining from making statements of violence, bringing weapons to school, pretending to use weapons or committing acts of violence in school. Any statements of harming others, or threatening language is not acceptable. This information is being relayed in an age-appropriate manner with your child’s classroom teacher present. I will connect this message with our FLIGHT expectations, specifically connecting it to letter G which stands for Give Respect.

At Lowell, I want your child, and all our children, to feel safe and supported during the school day and beyond. I thank you for your continued collaboration and support.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

KIDS State Survey of Kindergarten Readiness

Kindergarten readiness is a key area of focus for the State of Illinois. School districts in Illinois will report on 14 readiness measures of the Kindergarten Individual Development Survey (KIDS) for each kindergartner this fall.  You can learn more by visiting the KIDS Families Toolkit at https://www.isbe.net/Pages/KIDS-Families.aspx.

Cell Phones and Smartwatches

As a reminder, the BOE adopted a new cell phone and smartwatch policy in the spring. Please review the elementary guidelines and reach out with any questions. Thank you for your collaboration.

Elementary School:

  • The use of cell phones and wearable devices including, but not limited to, smartwatches that have the capability to provide voice, messaging or data communication between two or more people are prohibited in school.

  • Any devices brought to school must remain powered off (not in “vibrate or “silent” mode) and stored in backpacks or designated areas (e.g., the office) throughout the day.

  • Students with documented medical needs requiring smart devices may use them with prior approval from the school administration.

Chromebook Reminders

Students in 1-5 grade received their chromebooks this week. Chromebooks are used as a tool to support learning within our classrooms. Here are the expectations for student use which were reviewed with students this week:

  • charging it each night when it comes home

  • carrying and storing it safely to avoid damage

  • keeping it away from food and drinks

  • using it only for sites and activities that have been shared by a teacher

  • keeping settings the same unless directed by a teacher

It is the district expectation that chromebooks go home each evening and are charged at home. Students do not have the option of leaving their chromebook at school. Thank you for your support!
