Happy Summer Hawthorne Families,

I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather with family and friends. Our family has been enjoying swim team practice every day and short trips to places like the Indiana Dunes and the beach. Summer is a time to make some wonderful memories.

When we return to school, you will receive a newsletter each Friday at 4PM that Hawthorne Elementary School and the Hawthorne PTA work together to create. At the bottom of each newsletter you will find important dates. Throughout the newsletter we include details about those events and highlight any exciting activities from the week.

In our first newsletter in August, I will share important details about arrival and dismissal procedures. These include directions for where students should line up, the car drop off area, bus drop off, the cross walk, and so much more. Please take time to read through this carefully and review these expectations with your child and anyone who will be dropping off or picking up your child (grandparents, neighbors, babysitters, etc).

For those of you with incoming kindergarten students, tomorrow (July 10) is a play date on the playground from 6-7PM. Details are in the flyer within this newsletter.

Until August, keep making those memories! If you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out me at holly.zimmer@cusd200.org.

Sincerely,

Holly Zimmer, Principal

Encourage your students to read this summer!

We want all of our students to keep reading all summer long! To help make it fun (it is summer, after all), we are excited to announce Hawthorne’s Summer Reading Challenge. Next week, students in grades K-4 will bring home a sheet with paired challenges to complete. Students pick one challenge from each pair to complete and mark it off as they go. Return the completed sheet when school resumes to be invited to our Summer Reading Celebration in September. Just complete one challenge from each pair to join the fun!

You can find information (and printable challenge sheets) on the LLC’s Summer Reading site. There are also links to award-winning and nominated book lists to complete some of the challenges.

While you’re on the LLC site, click over to the Reading and Research Resources page. There are links and login details for district resources that allow students to access ebooks and audiobooks on their Chromebooks or other devices.

Back on the summer reading site, you’ll also find links to the public library summer reading programs. Both the Carol Stream Public Library and Wheaton Public Library have some fun activities and great prizes and it’s free to participate. You don’t even need a library card! There are also links to some other great summer reading incentives with companies like Pizza Hut, Barnes and Noble, and Scholastic.
