📚 Hawthorne Elementary PTA Book Fair📚 |
|
|
Get ready to celebrate the joy of reading! The Hawthorne Elementary School PTA Book Fair is coming November 10–14 and it’s sure to be a week filled with excitement and discovery for our young readers.
Each class will enjoy a special “Preview Day” to visit the fair and create their own wish lists of favorite books. Before school the book fair will be open Tuesday from 8:30AM-9:00AM. On Wednesday the book fair will be open from 3:30PM-4:30PM. Evening shopping hours will take place on Thursday night from 5PM-7PM so families can stop by together or cross off items on those holiday wish lists! Students have access to purchase books from the book fair daily at recess time.
A huge thank-you to Kerri Mead and Emily Fedyski for organizing this year’s book fair. Their hard work helps bring the magic of reading to life for our students.
Want to be part of the fun? Check out the volunteer opportunities and join us in making this year’s Book Fair a success!

🐠 Exploring the Wonders of the Shedd Aquarium!🐠 |
Our students had an unforgettable adventure on their recent field trip to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago! The Shedd is one of the world’s largest indoor aquariums, home to thousands of aquatic animals from oceans, rivers, and lakes around the globe. Students marveled at the colorful coral reef fish, playful penguins, graceful beluga whales, and even got to experience hands-on exhibits that brought marine science to life.
This trip gave our students the opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world exploration—deepening their understanding of animal habitats, adaptations, and conservation.
A heartfelt thank you to our amazing PTA for making this enriching experience possible! Your support helps create lasting memories and inspires curiosity in our students every day. 🌊🐧

🌟Peer Buddy Lunch Builds Leadership & Empathy🌟 |
Third grade Hawthorne students have been invited to take part in a special Peer Buddy Lunch-a fun and meaningful opportunity to learn more about what it means to be a supportive and effective peer buddy to classmates.
Hosted by our Speech-Language Pathologist, Mrs. Amy Krischel, and SAIL Teacher, Mrs. Danielle Borsellino, students come together for lunch and take part in engaging discussions and activities focused on understanding different communication styles, practicing empathy and perspective-taking, learning strategies to be a helpful, respectful, and encouraging friend.
We’ve had 20 students participate, with most attending both days! Students asked thoughtful questions and demonstrated a growing understanding of empathy, as well as new ways to connect and engage with peers who may communicate or learn differently than themselves.
The Peer Buddy Lunch is a wonderful way for students to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and strengthen our caring and inclusive school community. 💙

3rd Graders Strengthen Math Skills Through Place Value Exploration |
|
|
Students in Mr. Gabriele’s third grade classroom have been diving deep into the world of numbers! Recently, they explored how to use their understanding of place value to add three-digit numbers in a variety of ways.
By combining like place values and applying strategies and properties of operations, students practiced adding within 1,000 — an important step in developing strong number sense. They worked with base-ten blocks to make the process hands-on and visual, and then analyzed and improved different algorithms for addition.
Through these activities, students discovered how multiple methods can lead to the same solution and built connections between concrete models and written representations. Their hard work is helping them become confident, flexible problem-solvers who truly understand what’s happening when they add large numbers!
