Attendance Reminders

Dear Families,

Thank you for your continued support of your child’s education! As we are now well into the school year, I want to emphasize the importance of your child attending school each day. Students who attend school regularly typically demonstrate higher learning outcomes than those with poor attendance. Being present each day affords your child all the important experiences that come with attending school such as friendships, clubs, activities, and athletics. Students also learn responsibility and work ethic through consistent attendance. Please send your child to school every day unless he or she has a contagious illness or is running a fever. Throughout this year we will monitor each student’s attendance so that we can work with families when the number of absences puts a student at risk. Thank you, always for your involvement in your child’s education.

Sincerely,
Holly Zimmer

Wheaton North Football Day

Hawthorne Elementary recently hosted a special event—Wheaton North Football Day—welcoming the Wheaton North High School Varsity Football Team to our school. Students spent the day participating in fun, football-themed activities while learning the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship.

Guided by the high school athletes, Hawthorne students practiced passing, catching, and working together in group challenges. The excitement and energy were contagious as our younger students connected with the older role models, building school spirit and community pride.

The event not only gave students a chance to build their athletic skills but also highlighted the value of collaboration, perseverance, and having fun through play. A big thank you to the Wheaton North football players, Mr. Quarto, our teachers, and coaches for making this a memorable day for our Hawthorne Hawks!

Donations for Hawthorne Buddies

Hawthorne Buddies is an after school program supporting our multilingual learners and connecting them to positive peer role models in the community. This gives students the opportunity to work with Wheaton North High School students as well as Wheaton College students to read stories, play games, enjoy a snack together, and work on academic areas.

Each year, our generous community helps to provide snacks for the students. If you are able to help, please sign up to donate. You can find the sign up HERE. We have 40 students in the program and are looking for snack donations or Aldi gift cards. Thank you for supporting our community.

Volume Review in 5th Grade

5th graders in Mrs. West's class paired their creativity and volume understanding by creating Volume Critters this week! Either solo or in small groups, students selected an animal to recreate using connecting cubes, developed volume equations for their 4-6 design components and solved for the total volume. From the tiniest mouse and bumblebee to building a humongous whale and elephant, the 5th graders wowed us with their designs and volume demonstrations!

End of Month Happy Heart Celebration

At Hawthorne Elementary, students are always working hard to learn and live by the Hawthorne Way—our schoolwide expectations that help build a safe, respectful, and responsible learning community. To celebrate students who go above and beyond in demonstrating the Hawthorne Way, we have the Happy Heart Award.

When a student earns a Happy Heart, they receive a recognition ticket noting their name, the staff member who recognized them, and the reason they stood out. A portion of the ticket also goes home, so families can join in celebrating their child’s success.

Each month, we bring all of these celebrations together during our Happy Heart Monthly Drawing. Students who have earned Happy Hearts throughout the month have their names entered into the drawing for a special activity with a Hawthorne Staff member. The celebration is a fun way to honor students’ positive choices, reinforce our schoolwide expectations, and recognize the wonderful ways our Hawthorne Hawks support one another each day.

The Happy Heart Award

Students at Hawthorne Elementary School are always learning and growing. One of the things we pride ourselves on at Hawthorne is the work we do to ensure students understand, demonstrate, and reinforce schoolwide expectations. At Hawthorne, students learn about the Hawthorne Way during the first week of school with Mrs. Zimmer. During the year, we work to reinforce the things we learn about the Hawthorne Way.

The Happy Heart Award is a recognition ticket given to students who go above and beyond to demonstrate the Hawthorne Way during the school day. Students who earn this will receive a ticket with their name on it, the staff member who recognized them, and the reason they were recognized. The recognition portion will go home to celebrate with family.

Congratulations to this week's Happy Heart Award drawing winners!
