🔢Mathematicians Compare, Communicate, & Connect! 🔢

Our kindergarten students are busy building their math and communication skills as they learn to compare numbers using key vocabulary such as more than, less than, and equal to. To support all learners, teachers have thoughtfully paired sign language visuals with each concept, allowing every child to participate in a meaningful and inclusive way.

Students practice their new skills through a fun and interactive game called Shake & Spill, where they compare the number of yellow and red counters. This engaging activity not only reinforces math understanding but also helps students learn important social skills like turn-taking, using oral language, and pairing sign language with spoken words.

To wrap up the lesson, partners raise their hands and share a compliment about something their partner did during the activity—building confidence, kindness, and a classroom community where everyone’s efforts are celebrated! 🌟

🌳Hawthorne Pride and Playground Safety 💛

Hawthorne Families,
As the school day ends and students enjoy time on the playground and field after 3:30PM, we want to remind everyone of a few important safety expectations.

Please note parents must supervise children on the playground and field. There is absolutely no climbing or hanging on the trees or the Hawthorne sign before or after school-we have noticed a significant amount of broken tree branches in these areas. Please also remind children to refrain from climbing on the baseball fence as well. These can be sharp and cause injury. These rules help keep everyone safe and show respect for the hard work our Conservation Club and Hawthorne families have put into keeping our school grounds beautiful.

Let’s continue to take pride in our school by keeping it safe, clean, and welcoming for all! Thank you for your cooperation and support in modeling Hawthorne Way 🌼

📊Second Grade Mathematicians at Work! 🧮

Our second graders have been hard at work exploring word problems and equations using tape diagrams! This visual strategy helps students organize information, see relationships between numbers, and deepen their understanding of addition and subtraction. It’s exciting to watch their confidence grow as they solve problems and explain their thinking like true mathematicians!

Fall Festival 2025

Get ready for some festive fun! Hawthorne Elementary will celebrate our annual Fall Festival on Thursday, October 31, 2025. Students are invited to wear their costumes to school as we enjoy a day filled with school spirit and seasonal excitement.

Costume Guidelines:
To ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable day, please keep the following in mind:

  • Costumes should allow students to use the restroom, eat lunch, and participate in the school day independently.

  • Masks and headgear that cover the face or make it difficult to identify the student are not permitted.

  • Props, imitation weapons, and theatrical accessories should be left at home.

  • Costumes or makeup that are threatening, gory, or inappropriate are not allowed.

Parade Information:
Students will showcase their costumes during our annual Fall Festival Parade!

  • The parade will begin as students exit Door 1, turn left down Wakeman to the red Hawthorne sign, and complete the Monster Lap before heading back through the field and re-entering at Door 7.

  • Kindergarten students will have their own special parade following their festival time at 10:10 a.m. Their route begins at Door 14, travels in front of the school, and concludes as they re-enter through Door 7.

We can’t wait to see our Hawthorne students dressed in their creative, fun, and school-appropriate costumes as we celebrate this fall tradition together!

🎃 Hawthorne Halloween Costume Drive! 👻

It’s that spooky-fun time of year again, and we’re helping make sure every Hawthorne student can join in the excitement!

We’re collecting gently used or new Halloween costumes for students in need of a little extra magic this season. All sizes and styles are welcome—from superheroes to princesses, pumpkins to pirates!

🕸️ Donation Details:

  • Drop off costumes in the Hawthorne Main Office between October 20–29

  • Please ensure costumes are clean and in good condition

  • Accessories (like hats, masks, or capes) are welcome too!

Your generosity helps every child experience the joy of dressing up and celebrating with friends. Thank you for helping us make Halloween at Hawthorne a treat for all! 🧡

❤️Week of Giving at Hawthorne Elementary 🥫

Hawthorne students showed their generosity and school spirit during our People’s Resource Center Food Drive! Each day featured a fun spirit theme connected to a type of donation—like Twin Day for foods that go together and Pajama Day for donating favorite breakfast items. Grade levels worked together to collect food throughout the week, and our Student Council had the special job of counting and delivering the donations to the People’s Resource Center.

A big thank you to our Hawthorne community for your kindness and support in helping others! 💛

Hawthorne Conservation Club Cares for Our Outdoor Classroom 🌿

On Monday, October 20, the Hawthorne Elementary Conservation Club met by the outdoor classroom to lend a helping hand to nature! Students worked together to pull weeds, tidy up the area, and prepare the space for a long winter’s nap. Their hard work helps keep our outdoor learning area beautiful and ready for springtime exploration. We’re so proud of our Conservation Club members for their teamwork and dedication to caring for our school environment! 💚

🍎Donations for Hawthorne Buddies❤️

Hawthorne Buddies is an after school program supporting our multilingual learners and connecting them to positive peer role models in the community. This gives students the opportunity to work with Wheaton North High School students as well as Wheaton College students to read stories, play games, enjoy a snack together, and work on academic areas.

Each year, our generous community helps to provide snacks for the students. If you are able to help, please sign up to donate. You can find the sign up HERE. We have 40 students in the program and are looking for snack donations or Aldi gift cards. Thank you for supporting our community.

❤️The Happy Heart Award❤️

Students at Hawthorne Elementary School are always learning and growing. One of the things we pride ourselves on at Hawthorne is the work we do to ensure students understand, demonstrate, and reinforce schoolwide expectations. At Hawthorne, students learn about the Hawthorne Way during the first week of school with Mrs. Zimmer. During the year, we work to reinforce the things we learn about the Hawthorne Way.

The Happy Heart Award is a recognition ticket given to students who go above and beyond to demonstrate the Hawthorne Way during the school day. Students who earn this will receive a ticket with their name on it, the staff member who recognized them, and the reason they were recognized. The recognition portion will go home to celebrate with family.

Congratulations to this week's Happy Heart Award drawing winners!
