Attendance Reminders

Dear Families,

Thank you for your continued support of your child’s education! As we are now well into the school year, I want to emphasize the importance of your child attending school each day. Students who attend school regularly typically demonstrate higher learning outcomes than those with poor attendance. Being present each day affords your child all the important experiences that come with attending school such as friendships, clubs, activities, and athletics. Students also learn responsibility and work ethic through consistent attendance. Please send your child to school every day unless he or she has a contagious illness or is running a fever. Throughout this year we will monitor each student’s attendance so that we can work with families when the number of absences puts a student at risk. Thank you, always for your involvement in your child’s education.

Sincerely,
Holly Zimmer

3rd Grade Ag in the Classroom

Third graders at Hawthorne Elementary School enjoyed an exciting visit from the DuPage County Farm Bureau through the Agriculture in the Classroom program! Ag in the Classroomis a statewide educational initiative that helps students and teachers discover how agriculture impacts our daily lives—from the food we eat to the clothes we wear.

During the visit, agricultural educators engaged students in hands-on learning activities that bring farming and food production to life. This interactive experience not only connected classroom learning to the real world but also helped students see how agriculture plays an important role in their community and beyond

Welcome Back, Mrs. Schubert!

Our 4th graders had a wonderful surprise last week when a familiar, friendly face walked through their classroom door: our very own retired teacher, Mrs. Schubert!

The students’ faces lit up with excitement to welcome her back to Hawthorne. Mrs. Schubert shared amazing stories and photos from her adventures all across the country. The students listened with wide eyes as she told them about hiking the Appalachian Trail, exploring the swampy Everglades, and waking up early to see the very first sunrise in the country at Acadia National Park. They also heard tales from the Great Smoky Mountains and the giant, snowy peaks of Denali National Park in Alaska!

It was a huge treat to see a beloved former teacher and learn about the beautiful parks in our country. Thank you, Mrs. Schubert, for sharing your incredible journeys with us!

First Grade Mathematicians at Work!

Our first grade students at Hawthorne Elementary School have been busy thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving like true mathematicians! Through hands-on activities, collaboration, and math discussions, students are learning to explore numbers, make connections, and explain their thinking.

Donations for Hawthorne Buddies

Hawthorne Buddies is an after school program supporting our multilingual learners and connecting them to positive peer role models in the community. This gives students the opportunity to work with Wheaton North High School students as well as Wheaton College students to read stories, play games, enjoy a snack together, and work on academic areas.

Each year, our generous community helps to provide snacks for the students. If you are able to help, please sign up to donate. You can find the sign up HERE. We have 40 students in the program and are looking for snack donations or Aldi gift cards. Thank you for supporting our community.

FastBridge Fall Assessment Results

As a District, one of our goals this year is to implement effective monitoring and assessment tools to measure progress for academics and the social emotional needs of students. Toward that end, we have begun the implementation of FastBridge academic assessment and student behavior screener. These assessments are administered three times a year--fall, winter and spring. Your child’s scores will be available for the fall assessment window in ParentVue on October 14 at 4:00 PM.

The Happy Heart Award

Students at Hawthorne Elementary School are always learning and growing. One of the things we pride ourselves on at Hawthorne is the work we do to ensure students understand, demonstrate, and reinforce schoolwide expectations. At Hawthorne, students learn about the Hawthorne Way during the first week of school with Mrs. Zimmer. During the year, we work to reinforce the things we learn about the Hawthorne Way.

The Happy Heart Award is a recognition ticket given to students who go above and beyond to demonstrate the Hawthorne Way during the school day. Students who earn this will receive a ticket with their name on it, the staff member who recognized them, and the reason they were recognized. The recognition portion will go home to celebrate with family.

Congratulations to this week's Happy Heart Award drawing winners!

-Mrs. Zimmer
