Hawthorne Elementary School Winter Concert

Hawthorne Elementary School celebrated the season with a wonderful Winter Concert this week, showcasing the hard work, talent, and enthusiasm of our students. Students performed beautifully, filling the gym with music and holiday cheer. We are incredibly proud of every student who took the stage-their dedication and teamwork made the evening truly memorable.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to our families for attending and supporting their children, to our staff for assisting with preparations and logistics, and to our students for their outstanding performances. We extend a special note of appreciation to Mrs. Tompkins, whose leadership and commitment to our music program made this event possible.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to such a special night at Hawthorne. We are grateful for our community and look forward to many more celebrations together.

Congratulations to Our Fifth Grade DARE Graduates!

We are proud to celebrate Mrs. West’s and Mrs. Klan's fifth graders on their successful completion and graduation from the DARE program, led by Officer Seth Berlin of the Wheaton Police Department. This important program provides students with the knowledge and skills to make safe, healthy, and responsible decisions as they grow.

We were honored to welcome Chief Youker as a special guest at the graduation ceremony. Chief Youker had the opportunity to learn more about Hawthorne’s DARE program-and even shared a fun connection with our students: he attended Hawthorne Elementary School himself and graduated from the DARE program right here!

As part of their learning, each fifth grader wrote an essay describing how they plan to use the DARE decision-making model in their daily lives. Congratulations to Soren S., whose essay was selected as this year’s winner!

We are so proud of all of our DARE graduates and look forward to seeing how they continue to make positive choices in the years ahead.

Congratulations to our PTA Reflections Submissions!

We are proud to celebrate all Hawthorne students who participated in this year’s PTA Reflections Contest! This national program encourages students to explore their creativity through visual arts, photography, literature, music composition, film, and dance. Each year, students respond to a specific theme-this year’s theme, “Accepting Imperfection,” inspired thoughtful, imaginative, and meaningful submissions from our talented students.

Our participants embraced the challenge, using their artwork and ideas to show how growth, courage, and creativity often emerge from trying new things and learning through mistakes. Their entries beautifully reflected the theme and showcased the unique perspectives and artistic strengths of our students.

We congratulate every student who took part and thank our families and staff for encouraging creativity and supporting the arts at Hawthorne. Your enthusiasm helps make programs like Reflections possible. We are so proud of our Hawks!

ParentVUE Attendance Reporting-Coming Soon!

Dear Hawthorne Elementary School Families,

We are excited to announce a fantastic new feature within our ParentVUE mobile app designed to make managing your student's attendance even more convenient!

While the traditional method of calling your child's school attendance line remains fully functional, you now have the ability to report planned absences directly through the ParentVUE app. This option will be available starting the week of January 12, 2026.

This new digital option allows you to notify us in advance of any scheduled absences, such as illness, medical appointments, family travel, or other planned events. It’s a fast, easy way to communicate important attendance information without needing to make a phone call during busy hours.

How to Use the New Planned Absence Feature

Open the ParentVUE Mobile App on your smartphone or tablet. This can also be done via an internet browser on the web by going to this website.

Log in with your credentials.

Navigate to the Attendance section or click the Report Absences button.

Follow the prompts to enter the start date, end date, reason for absence, and any necessary comments. Note: leaving a note regarding the absence is required. Submit the request.

Currently, ParentVUE can only record full day absences. If an absence will be a partial day, please note the time in the notes section (i.e. periods that will be missed for MS/HS) so that your child’s school can reflect that in their records. Lastly, this attendance feature still adheres to adopted cut off times for excused absences as stated in each school’s student handbook.

We believe this new feature will be a significant time-saver and enhance our communication regarding student attendance. If you have not yet downloaded the ParentVUE mobile app, please search for "ParentVUE" in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Thank you for your partnership in ensuring accurate and timely attendance records for all our students.

Sincerely,

Community Unit School District 200

2025 Reindeer Run Fun

❤️The Happy Heart Award❤️

Students at Hawthorne Elementary School are always learning and growing. One of the things we pride ourselves on at Hawthorne is the work we do to ensure students understand, demonstrate, and reinforce schoolwide expectations. At Hawthorne, students learn about the Hawthorne Way during the first week of school with Mrs. Zimmer. During the year, we work to reinforce the things we learn about the Hawthorne Way.

The Happy Heart Award is a recognition ticket given to students who go above and beyond to demonstrate the Hawthorne Way during the school day. Students who earn this will receive a ticket with their name on it, the staff member who recognized them, and the reason they were recognized. The recognition portion will go home to celebrate with family.

Congratulations to this week's Happy Heart Award drawing winners!
