CUSD 200 Website Resources

As part of our ongoing commitment to keep families informed and engaged, we want to remind you of the valuable resources available on our district website. Our website serves as a central hub for important information such as policies, procedures, and contact information that you may need throughout the school year. CUSD 200 makes frequent updates and additions to the content on the website to help parents and community members stay informed about the work of the district. While our website contains a multitude of information, we want to highlight a few areas that may be useful to parents and community members this year.

  • New District Safety and Security Website - This month, CUSD 200 updated the website to include a comprehensive overview of the safety and security measures in place across all our buildings. We hope this provides some clarity and awareness around the many safety and security measures we have in place. This page can be found on the district and all school websites.

  • Who to Contact - There are guides to help community members know who to contact with a variety of questions or concerns by building levels that can be found under the parent section of the district and school websites.

  • Board Meetings - The 2024-25 calendar for Board of Education meetings can be found on this page.

  • Employment Opportunities - CUSD 200 is always seeking talent and skills to support the important work of helping our students succeed.

  • Facility Rental Information - Our buildings and property of the school district are available for the community to rent for various gatherings. This website includes rental information and an application.

We encourage the community to explore these tools and stay connected with us as we work together to help all students succeed.

Alexis Hanson

Staff Spotlight: Alexis Hanson

Alexis Hanson joined CUSD 200 in July 2024 as the Executive Director of Special Education. With more than 18 years of experience in special education, she is passionate about fostering collaboration and enhancing student outcomes. Mrs. Hanson believes in the power of community engagement and is committed to addressing the unique challenges faced by all stakeholders.

What inspired you to pursue a career in Special Education?

I have always known that I wanted to be an educator, but my perspective on education transformed as I grew up. I witnessed my mom tirelessly supporting my brother at the kitchen table, day in and day out, which deepened my appreciation for the challenges many families face. It was during high school that a pivotal moment occurred: a teacher in my childcare class encouraged me to expand my learning into an independent study focused on working with students with special needs. This experience not only solidified my passion for education, but also ignited my commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments.

What is your background in special education, and what made you choose taking on this role in CUSD 200?

I began my journey in special education as an elementary special education teacher, focusing on grades K-3. My passion for instruction and my commitment to teaching foundational literacy and math skills drove me in this role for ten years. I then transitioned to an instructional coach, where I worked closely with general education teachers to enhance instructional strategies and support all learners. While I enjoyed this position, I found myself missing the special education aspect, which led me to return to that department as a special education coordinator. My desire to make a broader impact on student outcomes fueled my aspiration to step into an administrative role. From there, I progressed through various leadership roles, including assistant director, associate director, and ultimately director of elementary education within CUSD 303 in St. Charles.

When I discovered the opening in CUSD 200 and began my research, I was impressed by the district's reputation for fostering a warm, collaborative culture. During the interview process, I felt an immediate connection and witnessed this reputation in action. I am excited about the opportunity to broaden my horizons in such an environment and to contribute meaningfully to the educational community on a larger scale.

What are your immediate priorities for special education in CUSD 200?

Upon stepping into my role within CUSD 200, my immediate priorities were to listen to stakeholders, learn about the system, and build strong relationships. Collaboration is central to my mission, and I deeply value the insights and feedback from our community — students, parents, educators, and stakeholders alike. Recently, I had the privilege of participating in a series of listening sessions that provided me with diverse perspectives. These conversations have enriched my understanding of the unique challenges we face and the pathways we can explore to enhance our programs. As a result, these insights will guide my priorities moving forward, as they now align with our collective goals.

What major work projects do you have planned for this year?

Currently, I have been focused on conducting listening sessions with various stakeholder groups, as well as administering surveys to both staff and families. The insights gathered from these sessions are crucial for the improvement of our department. I have been analyzing the trends from this feedback and will present my findings at the Committee of the Whole Board Meeting on October 23rd. During this meeting, I will highlight our current work plan for the school year, identify additional areas of focus based on stakeholder feedback, and outline future priorities that emerge from these discussions.

Thank you to everyone in the CUSD 200 community who has shared their valuable input and feedback through these surveys and listening sessions. Your voices are essential in shaping the future of our special education programs, and I am grateful for your continued support and engagement. Together, we will work to create an inclusive, supportive environment where all students can thrive.

Wheaton North High School Invites Staff and District Administrators to “Shadow a Student” for a Day

Over the past few weeks, more than 35 Wheaton North High School staff members and CUSD 200 Administrators such as Superintendent, Dr. Jeff Schuler, Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services, Mrs. Melissa Murphy and Assistant Superintendent for Student Services, Dr. Chris Silagi, have spent time shadowing Wheaton North High School students for a day. During the Shadow a Student experience, staff members immerse themselves in student life at Wheaton North by following an assigned student's class schedule.

At the conclusion of the day, staff and students come together for a debrief to share what they learned and observed. The takeaways have been extremely impactful on the culture and climate of the school, the value of building authentic connections in school, the challenges of balancing academics and extracurriculars and the ability to identify roadblocks that impede learning as well as addressing ways to improve the student experience and planning out long-term changes to be made.

Sean Kennedy, an Instructional Coach and coordinator of the “Shadow a Student” program at Wheaton North, highlighted that the “overwhelming amount of interest in the program demonstrates the genuine desire to establish and maintain positive relationships within the building and around the district.” He continued by saying, “The ability for a staff member to step into the shoes of a high school student in 2024 will truly benefit all involved by, at the very least, opening their eyes to a new perspective.”

The enthusiastic participation of student volunteers and CUSD 200 staff has made this a successful experience that fosters empathy and drives positive changes in our school culture and instructional practices. Wheaton North will offer this experience to staff members, both in the building and around the district, again this Spring.

Hawthorne Students Launch Refreshment Ordering System for Staff

Hawthorne Elementary School students in the Primary and Intermediate Supportive Academic program (PISA) and Social Academic Integrated Learning (SAIL) programs got together to stretch their math skills and brighten staff members' day by starting a refreshment ordering system. They are infusing technology into learning by utilizing Google Forms to collect requests and using their math skills to calculate order totals and figure out what change they need to give back. What a great way to incorporate real-life experiences and build connections in school!
