In alignment with CUSD 200’s Vision 2026 Strategic Plan goals, the Board of Education recently approved the posting of four proposed curriculum and instructional materials for high courses for public review and comment. The proposed materials will support our district’s work in Career Pathways, dual credit and advanced coursework at the high school level as we expand our programming to prepare students for a full range of post-secondary opportunities.
Please see below for an overview of each of these focus areas and the proposed curriculum and instructional materials for each area.
What is a Career Pathway?
A Career Pathway is a focused program or course of study designed to help students explore and prepare for careers in specific fields or industries. Career Pathways integrate academic learning with technical and career-oriented education, providing students with knowledge, skills, and hands-on experiences relevant to their chosen area of interest. A Career Pathway experience includes early college coursework, work-based learning, career awareness education, and aligned co-curriculars.
What curriculum content is being proposed in relation to Career Pathways?
Engineering Essentials:
Project Lead the Way (PLTW) offers a comprehensive Engineering Pathway for high school students, featuring a series of courses aimed at building engineering skills and preparing students for post-secondary studies or careers in STEM fields. The introductory course, Engineering Essentials, gives students a foundational understanding of engineering, covering various disciplines and essential skills. In this course, students learn about the engineering design process, develop technical skills, practice teamwork, and engage in problem-solving activities. Both high schools are investigating two additional PLTW Engineering courses to add in future years. These include Introduction to Engineering and Principles of Engineering.
Social Media Marketing:
Social Media Marketing will be the second dual credit course in our marketing pathway. The other is Sport Marketing. This is a College of DuPage (COD) Dual Credit course. As part of the course, students are required by COD to use the Stukent Social Media Simternship program. This interactive, online program provides students with hands-on, real-world experience in social media marketing and management.
What is Dual Credit?
A dual credit class is a course offered in high school that allows students to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously if they earn a certain grade. These classes are typically taught in partnership with a local college or university, either by high school teachers who meet college credentialing requirements or by college instructors.
What curriculum content is being proposed in relation to Dual Credit?
Introduction to Literature
Introduction to Literature is a Transferable General Education Dual Credit Course where students can earn three credits for Humanities with COD. This course is an elective for seniors and is intended for students who want to take a dual credit course with a literature focus.
Social Media Marketing:
Please see above.
What is Advanced Placement Coursework?
An Advanced Placement (AP) class is a college-level course offered in high school that allows students the opportunity to earn college credit by taking a test at the end of the course.
What curriculum and instructional materials are being proposed in relation to Advanced Placement?
Advanced Placement (AP) Precalculus
AP Precalculus is a new high school course offered by the College Board to prepare students for college-level calculus. This course allows students who enter high school in Algebra I (A) the opportunity to take an AP math course before graduation. It is a comprehensive preparation for AP Calculus AB or BC and is ideal for students aiming to study STEM fields in college.
In alignment with our commitment to preparing students for a full range of post-secondary opportunities, we are excited to present these proposed curriculum content for four new high school courses for public review and feedback. These new courses reflect our dedication to providing rigorous, relevant, and engaging programming in Career Pathways, dual credit, and advanced coursework.
We encourage you to explore the proposed materials and share your thoughts during the public review period by emailing Ian Smith, Director of High School Instruction, at ian.smith@cusd200.org.
