Keeping Students Safe: Inside CUSD 200’s PREPaRE Model

At CUSD200, the safety and well-being of your children are our very highest priority. Protecting students and staff is the foundation that makes teaching and learning possible and we are committed to taking every step we can to maintain secure, supportive and prepared schools.

Our daily focus in every building centers on four key areas, aligned with FBI and Homeland Security recommendations:

  • Lock your doors: Maintain a secure school environment.

  • Know your students: Build strong relationships and identify potential concerns.

  • Perform threat assessments: Proactively evaluate and address potential risks.

  • Know your safety procedures: Ensure staff and students are prepared to respond to emergencies.

Simply stated, these are the things we can control. Therefore, our primary focus should revolve around these areas so we can do our best to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for our students and staff.

We also recognize that unexpected crises can occur. That’s why we adopted the PREPaRE framework, a nationally recognized model that helps schools respond quickly, effectively and compassionately when needed.

PREPaRE stands for:

  • Prevent and prepare for crises

  • Reaffirm physical health, welfare, and safety perceptions

  • Evaluate psychological trauma risk

  • Provide crisis interventions, and

  • Respond to mental health needs

  • Examine crisis preparedness effectiveness

Using this framework ensures that all of our schools speak the same language when it comes to safety and crisis response. Additionally, CUSD 200 has aligned the core components of our safety framework with the PREPaRe model, which are outlined in the graphic above.

Our administrators and student support teams have completed extensive PREPaRE training, and we continue to provide ongoing training for new employees. For more information on school safety and security, including safety partnerships and reminders for parents, please visit our website.

In the coming months, we will share more information about our safety practices, prevention strategies and recovery plans. We want to keep you informed and reassured that your child’s safety will always remain our top priority.

Student/Staff Celebrations

Madison Library Transformation

A dedicated team of Madison teachers and PTA leaders worked countless hours to design the school’s newly renovated library. From choosing furniture and paint colors to developing themes and décor, the group collaborated closely to bring the vision to life.

The planning team included LLC Director Jessica Kleinpaste, teachers Tori Rebholz (3rd), Lisa Feeley (2nd), Bailey Woodson (Reading), PTA President Dana Lopp and PTA Representative Jamie Laslo. PTA leaders and their children also played a creative role, designing much of the décor and building the tree and clouds that now enhance the library’s calming atmosphere. The project was made possible largely through funding from the Madison PTA.

Student Excellence Foundation Brings Monthly Mobile Food Markets to Families in Need

Each month, nearly 250 families in need receive a week or more of groceries through the Mobile Food Markets sponsored by the Student Excellence Foundation.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation has fully funded these markets to ensure families have consistent access to healthy food, said Terese Janik, Foundation Board Co-President.

Mobile Food Markets take place once a month at either Johnson Elementary School or the Villagebrook Apartments from 4:30–6:00 p.m. “We don’t turn anyone away,” Mrs. Janik emphasized. Families receive milk, eggs, protein, fresh produce and pantry staples at each event. The next one is Sept. 18 at Johnson Elementary School, 2S700 Continental Dr, Warrenville, IL

The Foundation partners with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to make these markets possible. Each month, volunteers are needed to help sort and distribute food. Volunteers can sign up by contacting Terese Janik at 630-677-8299 or terese.janik@studentexcellencefoundation.org.
