Superintendent’s Report

During his report, Superintendent Dr. Jeff Schuler expressed his gratitude to the student ambassadors during the 2024-25 school year as this meeting marked their last official meeting of the year.

Dr. Schuler also recognized the following events and celebrations as we end the 2024-25 school year:

He thanked the community for helping the District celebrate National Staff Appreciation Week May 5-9. In anticipation of Staff Appreciation Week, the District invited families, students, and community members to share personal shoutouts to staff who have made a difference in their lives. In just one week, we received nearly 600 heartfelt messages for teachers. We sent these messages to each individual staff member who received a message and it had an overwhelming impact on our staff members.

He also mentioned a new tradition that started this year at our two high schools. This year, graduating seniors took the opportunity to identify any staff member in CUSD 200 who has left a lasting impression on them during their time in our district. Seniors then had the opportunity to visit and surprise these teachers with an “Impact/Inspiration” award and took a moment to personally express their gratitude, and invite their former teachers to attend their upcoming graduation ceremony.

Dr. Schuler also recognized the Wheaton Warrenville PTA Council for their successful Scholarship breakfast, and the Student Excellence Foundation for their Distinguished Service Awards celebration.

Finally, Dr. Schuler took a moment to recognize the commemorative/memorial holidays/events that take place in June and July. In CUSD 200, we care for and support all of our students and staff. This includes individuals with disabilities, those of various races, ethnicities, backgrounds, and affiliations. While our schools are not in session during the months of June and July, we recognize that June is Pride month and July is Disability Pride month. Additionally, Juneteenth and the 4th of July are recognized as holidays. We certainly care for and support our students and staff who may be celebrating these months and holidays. We want them among all of our students and staff to know that they are cared for and supported in our schools.

Student Ambassadors Report

The Wheaton North High School Student Ambassador Carla Fonseca Gonzalez, and the Wheaton Warrenville South Student Ambassadors, Lauren Dedio, Katelyn Groves and Max Dudick, provided the board with a presentation on good news, updates and feedback on a variety of topics from their respective schools.

Updated Cell Phone/Smart Device Policy Posted for Public Review/Comment

CUSD 200 has engaged in a process to revise the cell phone/smart device policy at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Feedback was provided by students, staff, parents, and community members regarding this topic. The goal of updating the cell phone/smart device policy was to develop a plan that would create a learning environment with fewer distractions for students and staff, while still providing the flexibility and responsibility of cell phone possession where appropriate.

At the April Board of Education Meeting, the study and engagement process was reviewed, along with the feedback from CAC. Based on that feedback, the administrative team has continued to work on a revised set of expectations. The expectations outlined in the document presented to the Board align with expectations in recent legislation that has passed the Senate, and is being moved through the House, and balance the interests expressed by our stakeholder groups.

During its meeting, the Board of Education approved posting the updated cell phone/smart device policy for public review/comment. The policy can be reviewed by clicking this link.

For questions or to make public comments regarding the proposed board policy, please contact Matt Biscan, Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services, at matthew.biscan@cusd200.org or call 630-682-2015.

It is anticipated that the Board will vote on the cell phone/smart device policy at its meeting on June 11.

School Safety Review and Update

During the meeting, Dr. Chris Silagi, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services, and Mr. Matt Biscan, Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services, provided the Board with a presentation on School Safety that summarized some of the annual and new efforts the District is taking to create a safe learning environment.
